Scottish contracting and civil engineering firm RJ McLeod has reported improved turnover, pre-tax profit and margin, nearly 20 months after its acquisition by OCU Group.<\/p>\n

The Glasgow-based firm lengthened its accounting period from 30 October 2024 to 29 April 2025 to align with other OCU Group companies.<\/p>\n

It increased its turnover on an 18-month pro-rata basis by 5.2 per cent from \u00a3288.3m to \u00a3303m.<\/p>\n

During this time, the firm\u2019s pre-tax profit reached \u00a356.3m compared with a restated \u00a331m in the previous pro-rata period.<\/p>\n

RJ McLeod\u2019s margin therefore broadened from 10.7 per cent to 18.6 per cent.<\/p>\n

In its accounts, the firm noted that profit margin \u201ccontinues to remain resilient to significant inflationary market pressure and entering new sectors\u201d.<\/p>\n

It took on two additional directors and nine more administration staff over the period, bringing its average monthly headcount to 425 employees, who were paid \u00a352.6m over the 18 months to the end of April 2025.<\/p>\n

Although no dividends were paid during the period, the company accounts showed the directors declared a dividend of \u00a3105m payable to its parent company, OCU Group Ltd, at the end of July 2025.<\/p>\n

The firm held no external bank loans or overdrafts, while cash at hand halved from \u00a329.8m to \u00a313.1m.<\/p>\n

Stockport-based infrastructure services company OCU Group finalised its acquisition of RJ McLeod in June 2024<\/a>, thereby pushing the group\u2019s revenues to over \u00a3800m and placing it in a prime position to\u00a0grow its presence in constructing the infrastructure for the UK\u2019s energy transition, including battery storage facilities, wind turbines, hydro power, substation construction and grid reinforcement.<\/p>\n

At the time, the deal to buy RJ McLeod was described by OCU Group chief executive Michael Hughes as a \u201ckey milestone\u201d in the group\u2019s goal of becoming the \u201cleading energy transition and utilities contractor in the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n

For example, RJ McLeod was the main contractor on the 443-megawatt Viking Energy wind farm in Shetland and was the civils contractor on the new electricity substation near Peterhead.<\/p>\n

The company was founded by Roderick John Macleod in October 1951.<\/p>\n

Much of the firm\u2019s early success from the 1950s to the 1970s was down to its managing director and later chairman, Sandy Clark. Having been appointed joint managing directors in 1999, Clark\u2019s two sons, Graeme and Bruce, took RJ McLeod\u2019s turnover over the next 25 years from \u00a330m to \u00a3200m.<\/p>\n

Both stepped down in the wake of the takeover by OCU Group, although Bruce Clark remains a non-executive director.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
