The widow of a stoneworker who died from silicosis aged just 28 has called for more to be done to protect those in the industry.<\/p>\n

Wessam Al Jundi died in May 2024, three years after he was diagnosed with silicosis.<\/p>\n

He had worked as a stonemason previously but after joining a firm called Yes Marble he dealt with artificial stone, also known as engineered stone or engineered quartz, in circumstances that a coroner later said were \u201ccompletely unsafe conditions to avoid [silica] dust exposure\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement issued through lawyers last week, Al Jundi\u2019s widow Malak Al Safade said: \u201cMy husband had worked with stone for many years yet within five years of starting to cut engineered stone he lost his life. The coroner has said he was working in terrible conditions with dust all around him and without the proper safety equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, none of us knew at the time that this would cost him his life. More must be done straight away to protect stoneworkers before other families have to go through the terrible pain we are going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

In November 2024, the senior coroner for West London, Lydia Brown, released a prevention of future deaths report, a step generally taken once a full inquest has concluded. The report said Al Jundi had developed an untreatable lung condition \u201cprobably caused by exposure to RCS [respirable crystalline silica] in his workplace\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cMany of the companies specialising in the finishing process of working with this product have a small number of employees and there appears to be an absence of safe working conditions, with no adequate water suppression systems for the dust created, inadequate respiratory personal protection equipment, and absent or inadequate ventilatory systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is therefore continuing to put the workforce at risk of death due to untreatable lung compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE)\u00a0investigation has not yet concluded and the inquest has not yet been heard.<\/p>\n

Al Safade\u2019s solicitor Andrew Cooper, from Leigh Day, said the case is one of a growing number the firm is dealing with due to the effects of engineered stone on workers.<\/p>\n

He said clients \u201chave described working in dust-filled rooms with no windows and no effective dust extraction equipment or respirators.\u201d<\/p>\n

An estimated 500 UK construction workers die due to silicosis each year, with the HSE rating it the industry\u2019s second biggest killer after asbestos.<\/p>\n

Last year, Construction News <\/em>examined <\/a>how artificial stone has created concerns over silicosis affecting younger workers over a shorter period of time than silica from traditional construction materials.<\/p>\n

The material, generally manufactured using quartz aggregate and polymer, is cheaper than traditional stone and has been a fashionable material for kitchen worktops since the early 2010s.<\/p>\n

Australia banned manufacture and supply of benchtops, panels and slabs made from the material in 2024 and their import at the beginning of 2025.<\/p>\n

In response to the coroners\u2019 report, the HSE highlighted its guidance on working with<\/a> the material.<\/p>\n

It said it is still investigating the circumstances leading to Al Jundi\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The watchdog has not backed a ban on the material previously<\/a>, but said in 2025 it is \u201copen to considering any interventions that will positively impact reduced risk and non-compliance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Two trade bodies suggested licensing systems could be introduced for worktop fabricators, in their respective responses to the coroner.<\/p>\n

The Italy-based Agglomerated Stone Manufacturers Association said a licensing system could include mandatory worker training; ensuring familiarity with environmental control measures; restrictions on fabrication without a license; a ban on dry cutting, grinding or polishing; probations on supplying to or purchasing from unlicensed fabricators.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s Worktop Fabricators Federation, which opposes a ban on artificial stone, emphasised that the risk from the material is from processing it and said manufacturers do not consider themselves responsible for its cutting.<\/p>\n

It suggested exploring approaches being considered by the Federation of Master Builders\u2019 campaign to ensure all builders are licensed, or a scheme similar to the FENSA registration system for double-glazing installers, to be applied to those supplying the worktops to customers.<\/p>\n

Yes Marble is no longer trading, according to the prevention of future deaths report.<\/p>\n

The firm remains registered with Companies House but it has not filed annual accounts since 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
