More than 100 workers have voted to strike at Severfield\u2019s Bolton site after being denied a pay rise, trade union GMB has announced.<\/p>\n

It said that more than 90 per cent of GMB members employed as welders, platers and machine operators have backed industrial action at the company\u2019s Lostock facility.<\/p>\n

Members began an overtime ban this week and are due to stage a one-day strike on 16 February, followed by two further days on 23 and 24 February, the union said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo worker anywhere deserves to be offered literally nothing,\u201d said GMB regional organiser John Weir.<\/p>\n

\u201cGMB members at Severfield do highly skilled work, in an industry where such talent is in short supply.<\/p>\n

\u201cGMB has provided a range of options to settle this dispute, but Severfield continues to say 0 per cent is their final offer, so our members are left with no choice but to strike.\u201d<\/p>\n

Severfield, ranked as the top steel contractor in the latest CN Specialists Index<\/a>, has delivered structural steelwork on projects including the Shard and Everton FC\u2019s Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.<\/p>\n

The firm said it had made a loss and would not increase pay, according to the GMB.<\/p>\n

In its most recent accounts<\/a> for the year to 29 March 2025, Severfield posted a \u00a317.5m pre-tax loss on turnover of \u00a3450.9m.<\/p>\n

The business employed a monthly average of 1,800 staff during the period.<\/p>\n

Weir said: \u201cSeverfield is a huge company, with revenues of nearly half a billion pounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of losses in a single year, that workers should shoulder the burden is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Severfield declined to comment.<\/p>\n

The dispute comes during a period of change at the Yorkshire-based contractor. On 11 February, the company appointed former ISG executive Andrew Page as chief financial officer and executive director<\/a>, with effect from 16 February.<\/p>\n

Last month, Severfield also confirmed it had closed its Modular Solutions business<\/a> after a strategic review.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
