{"id":538130,"date":"2026-02-13T12:45:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T12:45:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/?p=538130"},"modified":"2026-02-18T15:49:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T15:49:25","slug":"york-bridge-repairs-postponed-due-to-station-upgrade-delays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/civils\/york-bridge-repairs-postponed-due-to-station-upgrade-delays-13-02-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"York bridge repairs postponed due to station upgrade delays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The refurbishment of a major York city bridge has been pushed back until next year due to delays on the nearby Station Gateway project that is being delivered by John Sisk &amp; Son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The council announced on 6 February that due to \u201cunavoidable delays\u201d to the station upgrade, the bridge maintenance project has been postponed until April 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lendal Bridge, which spans the River Ouse between Station Road and Museum Street, was scheduled to close to vehicles for eight weeks in April to undergo essential maintenance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will involve painting, repairs, waterproofing and resurfacing works on the 150-year-old structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bridge was last repaired 20 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, the City of York Council\u2019s executive member for transport said prompt action was needed, otherwise it \u201cwould likely result in a future closure at a time not of the council\u2019s choosing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delays have been caused by unanticipated additional works at Station Gateway, the council has now said, including the rerouting of electrical supplies and the need to fill in an underground Victorian water tank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a result, we are rescheduling Lendal Bridge to a later date and thorough ongoing inspections will ensure the bridge remains safe for all users,\u201d said councillor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny pause in the Station Gateway project linked to the planned Lendal Bridge closure would lead to substantial additional costs for the city and cause longer disruption for residents and businesses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The council did not confirm to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whether the delays would result in additional costs to the Station Gateway project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an executive meeting report from 27 January, the council has allocated \u00a32.9m to Lendal Bridge\u2019s essential maintenance \u2013 \u00a31m more than originally reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Sisk &amp; Son was awarded the \u00a37.8m highway works project for the station upgrade in September 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme includes removing the Queen Street bridge, realigning Queen Street and several improvements across other transport facilities and pedestrian crossings. Sisk will also create a new public space called Station Square.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was originally set to be completed in 2025.
