Kier has been appointed to deliver a new eye hospital in Edinburgh for NHS Lothian.<\/span><\/p>\n

The facility at the Edinburgh BioQuarter will replace the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion (PAEP), which opened in 1969.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plans for a new eye hospital were raised over a decade ago, with Graham previously being awarded the job in 2018. The price tag then was \u00a345m.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, within a few years the build estimate jumped to \u00a383m, leading to the Scottish Government shelving the scheme until now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year the PAEP was temporarily closed after undergoing emergency repairs. The facility continues to be monitored after water safety and quality issues were flagged, NHS Lothian board minutes state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim Crombie, deputy chief executive of NHS Lothian, said in recent board minutes that the project timeline was expected to be between five and five-and-a-half years, but cited a \u201cnumber of uncertainties\u201d at this early stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to appoint Kier as our principal supply chain partner and take the next step in the process towards opening a new eye hospital in Lothian,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted that the hospital is becoming a reality, and that makes this milestone even more exciting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to thank our teams for their commitment and endurance throughout the planning of this project \u2013 I know this step will mean a great deal to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Kier\u2019s appointment follows its work on the NHS Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital in Glasgow and<\/span> Sunderland\u2019s Eye Infirmary<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sean Fenner, managing director of<\/span> Kier Construction<\/span><\/a> North and Scotland, said: \u201cOur team brings unrivalled expertise, shaped by landmark projects [\u2026] and informed by best practice from leading ophthalmic centres in the UK and internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWorking in partnership with NHS Lothian, we will create an environment that enhances patient experience, empowers staff and establishes a new standard of excellence in ophthalmic care across Scotland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The hospital will also provide specialist services, such as surgical retinal services, paediatric surgery and neuro-ophthalmology for patients from NHS Borders, Tayside and Fife, as well as Lothian.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
